What to do When Easter Feels like a Routine

Easter is a time of celebration, but for some, it can feel like just another holiday. Go to Church. Sing songs. Eat ham and potatoes at Grandma Julia’s. And then comes the eggy finale: Hide plastic eggs in the back yard. Wait for your kids to find the eggs. Watch them fight over who got the better eggs. Regret how sick you feel after eating 6 Reese’s eggs and a pack of Peeps… You know the drill.

It’s easy for it to feel either like any ol’ Sunday… or a sugary American holiday celebration.

If you’re struggling to feel joy this Easter, here are a few different practices to try:

Rediscover the Joy of Worship

Worship isn’t just music. Sometimes worship is the state of the heart, spending time reflecting on God’s goodness, or writing down ways you’re grateful. Take time to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and how it impacts your past, present, and future. And if music is a way you connect with God, let yourself to get lost in the joy of singing.

Embrace Silence and Solitude

Easter can also be a time for quiet reflection and introspection. Take some time for yourself to reflect on what the resurrection means to you personally. Consider taking a walk in nature, meditating, or reading scripture to connect with the deeper meaning of this holiday.

Connect with Community

While time alone is foundational to our spiritual growth, so is community. Consider spending time with others who are celebrating Easter. Or invite people who don’t know Jesus to join you for a meal.

Just Ask God

Sometimes you just can’t “will” joy to happen, no matter how many interesting or fun things you try. Sometimes you just have to sit there and ask God to bring joy into your life. Plop on your favorite chair, breathe in and out deeply, open your hands (it sounds weird, but it’s legit), and simply ask God to fill you and your family with joy this coming Sunday.

Hopefully these ideas help rekindle a little joy in your life this Sunday!

Happy Easter – from our United Faith Mortgage Family to yours!
