A shared room can be a really sweet experience for many siblings. Staying up past bedtime talking, working on school together, or building a massive fort with their bunk beds. For others, cries of “She took my pillow!” and the occasional scream-cry might be more prevalent. Either way, the way you build a space for kids can have an impact on how they act in the space and interact with each other.

Here are a few ways you can help your kids 1) feel like they have their own space in the room, and 2) keep their items more organized with storage solutions.

Bunk Beds with Storage: Bunk beds save space by utilizing vertical room, and choosing models with built-in storage drawers or shelves can maximize floor space for play. Alternatively, loft beds can free up space below for a desk, cozy reading nook, or storage bins.

Use Dividers Wisely: A simple curtain or bookcase can act as a room divider, giving each child a sense of personal space. Look for low-profile shelves or thin partitions that don’t take up much floor space but still provide visual separation.

Wall-Mounted Storage: Vertical storage options like wall-mounted bookshelves, hooks, or cubbies keep items off the floor and give each child a designated area for their things. Personalized storage boxes or baskets are great for keeping toys organized.

Multi-Functional Furniture: Invest in furniture that can serve more than one purpose, like a storage ottoman, under-bed drawers, or desks with built-in organizers. This helps keep essentials accessible without cluttering the room.

Under-Bed Storage Solutions: Utilize the space under the bed for storage bins, drawers, or rolling carts. This area can store toys, seasonal clothes, or school supplies, keeping items organized and out of sight but still accessible.

Corner Desks or Fold-Down Desks: A corner desk can save space and provide each child with their own study nook. Alternatively, fold-down desks mounted to the wall can be tucked away when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space.

Personalized Wall Hooks and Pegboards: Wall hooks and pegboards allow each child to hang their favorite items, from backpacks to jackets and accessories, without taking up closet space. Personalizing each hook with their name or initials adds a sense of ownership and keeps the room organized.

When you’re thinking through these solutions, it may be worth it to also allow your kids to have a voice in them. If they’re able to help pick out colors, weigh in on design, or come up with their own ideas, they may have a greater sense of respect and ownership for the space.

Good luck!
