We’ve been in a lot of conversations with friends and family lately about the P word. (Politics.) We’re sure you have, too. It’s gotten our family talking a lot about if we’re truly doing the best we can to listen and engage with people on all sides of the aisle. As well as how much we’re truly representing God in the midst of political conversations.

In seasons of political tension, it can feel like division is everywhere—on the news, online, and sometimes even within our own communities. How do we stay grounded in faith while navigating strong differences of opinion?

Choosing Unity Over Division

Scripture consistently points toward unity among believers, even when disagreements exist. That doesn’t mean ignoring convictions or avoiding important conversations. It means approaching those conversations with humility, patience, and a willingness to listen.

Healthy conversations require more than just sharing opinions—they require understanding.

The next political conversation you find yourself in that feels uncomfortable, follow these steps:

  1. Slow down.
  2. Ask questions.
  3. Resist the urge to react quickly.
  4. Remember it’s not about “winning”, but about reflecting Jesus.

The Role of Prayer

Prayer plays a critical role in times like these. It shifts focus away from arguments and toward something deeper. Praying for fellow believers—regardless of political alignment—reminds us that our identity is not rooted in a party, but in our faith.

Some simple ways to live this out include:

  • Praying for wisdom before engaging in difficult conversations
  • Asking God to give others peace, clarity, and guidance
  • Choosing to speak with grace, even when disagreeing
  • Remembering shared beliefs before focusing on differences

In divided times, unity doesn’t happen by accident—it’s a choice. Through intentional conversation and consistent prayer, believers can reflect a steadiness that stands out in a noisy world.

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
