Unpacking can take time, but it doesn’t mean it has to feel like you’re living in limbo.  With a few little touches, you can unpack and still feel settled.  Here are some tips we’ve gathered to help you feel at home while you unpack.

  • Pack a suitcase like you’re going on a 3 day trip.

This helps. Instead of relying on unpacking anything in order to function, know that you have everything you need in one bag.  Include some clothes you don’t mind going out in, should you need to – but keep some comfy things on hand as well.  Your favorite t-shirt or hoodie can make you feel like you’re in a familiar place before you even start unpacking.

  • Shower curtain + necessary bathroom supplies.

Probably the worst thing to forget, because after a long day, you’re going to want a shower. Have a shower curtain (or at least a liner) along with simple toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, soap and toothpaste somewhere easy to unpack. The rest can come later.

  • First load of laundry: wash your sheets and towels.

You know the amazing feeling of crawling into bed with clean sheets?  The rest of the bedroom might still be in boxes, but if you can get into a bed made with fresh sheets, you’ll already feel better.  Try throwing your sheets and towels in the washer right when you start to unpack, so you can make up your bed and get a good night’s sleep.  Bonus: fresh clean towels for your shower in the morning are amazing too.

  • Unpack the kitchen first.

Ordering in and using paper plates gets old, and it all makes you feel like you’re not in your own home.  Getting your kitchen unpacked and giving yourself the space to make even some simple meals and use some actually silverware will help you feel at home faster.  Because let’s face it, nobody likes eating with plastic silverware.

  • These are a few of my favorite things.

Something that’s always helped me when I’ve packed up and moved to a new place is having a small box of my “favorite things” that I’d like to have on hand as soon as possible.  It may sound ridiculous, but a few family pictures, a favorite candle, or the key-holder you always have by the door can make a huge difference in making a place feel like yours. I unpack my favorites box soon after I unload my furniture – just a picture on the shelf and a candle in the room make it feel like mine while I unpack the rest of the boxes.
