We’ve all been there – the moment you pull out of the garage and feel like you definitely, definitely forgot something… but you don’t know what.  What we’d all like to avoid is that feeling when we’re pulling out of the garage for the last time… on moving day.  If you’ve overthought what you could forget when moving day rolls around, this is for you.  We’ve gathered some of our favorite tips on common things people forget when moving – that you won’t.

Don’t Forget When Moving:

  • Pack the essentials SEPARATELY. Think overnight bags for each member of your family – toothbrush, kids jammies, a couple of outfits to last until you can unpack all the clothes boxes. Nobody wants to be rummaging through boxes on moving day wondering where their toothbrush is.
  • Leave the old keys. And make sure you get all the new keys to your new place as well!
  • Take your old garage door opener out of your car. This is easy to forget, but the people moving into your house will thank you.
  • Change your address! Best to do this about 2 weeks before you move, so forwarded mail starts coming around the same time you move in.
  • Check your monthly charges. This can actually save you money, and a lot of people forget.  Check any charges that come out of your account and make sure you actually still want those services – the membership to your gym that will now be an hour away, for example, would be a good one to cancel.  Some require a 30 day notice, so check a month or two before you move!
  • Notify schools and caregivers. Seems like a no-brainer, but honestly, mom brain is a thing.  Let people know you, and your kiddos, are moving.
  • Clean the new place before you move in. Because once all your stuff is in there, it will be a lot more difficult.  Plan a day you go in and prep.
  • Stock the fridge. If you can, stock the fridge at your new place before moving day.  Having snacks and things for easy meals like sandwiches the day of and even the few days after moving in will be a lifesaver.  Especially if you have kids who are always hungry.

Every moving day is different and it’s never perfect, but hopefully having this list on hand will help you avoid some of the common things people forget when moving.  And if you’re looking for your perfect home and in need of a lender, give us a call!  We’re faith-based and family-oriented, so what’s important to you is important to us.  We’d love to help!
